Democrats Run With Kemp Report

Associated Press

The Democratic rapid-response team was in full swing Friday in anticipation that Bob Dole would choose former professional quarterback Jack Kemp as his running mate.

In the lobby of the San Diego Marriott Hotel, next door to the GOP convention hall, Democratic operatives were handing out small footballs with the words “Hail Mary Pass” printed on them. Joe Lockhart, a spokesman for the Clinton-Gore campaign, was among those handing out the souvenirs.

In a calculated risk that looked better as the day wore on, entrepreneur Brian Harlin was already selling white T-shirts with “Dole-Kemp ‘96” in blue and white letters in the convention center.

The Democratic National Committee, meanwhile, issued a nine-page annotated memo highlighting the policy disagreements between Dole and Kemp over the years. The DNC paper pointed up differences on everything from the gold standard to balancing the budget to welfare.
