Long Beach Promotes Shumard

Bill Shumard, former athletic director at Cal State Fullerton, was named Long Beach State athletic director by university President Robert Maxson, the college announced Monday.
Shumard, a 1972 Long Beach graduate, has been the interim athletic director since March. Shumard was an assistant athletic director for two years. His annual salary will be $98,800.

Chapman University has hired a coach for its water polo team. Dennis Ploessel, assistant water polo and head swimming coach at Cypress College, will take over a program that was 5-25 last season.
Ploessel, who ran the swimming and water polo teams at Los Alamitos High from 1979-91, takes over for Marc Stamer, who resigned after one season.

Matthew Scott, men’s tennis coach at Southern California College, has resigned to take a graduate assistant position with the men’s team at Boise State, SCC Athletic Director Bob Wilson announced.
Scott, who graduated from SCC in 1995, led the Vanguards to an 11th-place tie at the NAIA National Tournament last year. He will pursue a masters degree in exercise and sports science at Boise State.

Vickie Gentry has been selected as the girls’ volleyball coach at Laguna Beach High. She had been the head coach at St. Margaret’s the last six seasons.
