Suit by Surfers in Turf War Will Go to Trial

A Superior Court judge has refused to throw out a civil lawsuit filed by six surfers over a turf war off Lunada Bay in the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

Judge Lawrence Crispo decided Tuesday that the suit filed against Palos Verdes Estates and local surfers can go to trial on Feb. 13.

In July, Geoff Hagins of Torrance and a group of South Bay surfers filed a suit alleging that locals surfing off the peninsula had engaged in assaults, vandalism, harassment “and other terrorist-like activities” in trying to keep the South Bay surfers out.

The suit also named the city of Palos Verdes Estates as a defendant, saying city officials have known for more than two decades about the activities of a group of local surfers as “the Bad Boys” but have done little to stop them.

Palos Verdes Estates Police Chief Gary Johansen and City Manager Jim Hendrickson have refused to discuss the case.
