NBC’S OLYMPIC TEAM

Howard Rosenberg, as usual, is dead on (“The Olympics’ Hollow Ring,” Aug. 11).
I told my husband after the umpteenth tear-jerker that the Olympics had turned into a nighttime soap. I was so glad when gymnastics were over and all gold medals awarded because I would no longer have to listen to the pompous ramblings of John Tesh. Send him back to the piano, where he can continue to compose his ersatz neoclassical tripe.
NBC geared their coverage for women? Not this one.

Let’s look at how NBC used its 170 hours of Olympics coverage:
60 hours: commercials.
50 hours: tape-delayed events not identified as such.
20 hours: promos for NBC shows.
19 hours: stories about the Dream Team, including Shaquille O’Neal’s trip to the shoe store.
19 hours: heart-wrenching John Tesh stories.
1 hour: live events.
That leaves one hour for the best of NBC’s coverage: Muhammad Ali at the opening ceremonies; Ali getting his medal replaced; and Ali stories, even with John Tesh. ALAN MATIS
