Steeler Kicker Gets New Deal

Norm Johnson, who had three field goals in the Pittsburgh Steelers’ season-opening 24-9 loss to Jacksonville, signed a two-year contract extension through 1998. Johnson, 36, will make $412,500 this season and the extension is worth $900,000. The former UCLA kicker set team records last season with 34 field goals and 141 points.

Backup cornerback Larry Brown, who saw little action in the Oakland Raiders’ season-opener because of a foot injury, does not expect to be completely sound Sunday against Kansas City.
Brown, the most valuable player in Super Bowl XXX for the Cowboys who signed a five-year, $12-million free-agent contract, injured his arch during training camp and still experiences pain.
A similar injury forced Mark McGwire of the Oakland Athletics to undergo two operations.
