1995 in Review

Laguna Hills served notice with its 35-16 victory over upstart Aliso Niguel in the league’s first week, and virtually clinched the PCL title two weeks later with a 20-14 victory over University with a bizarre ending. University’s Fred Roberts received a pass into the end zone with 43 seconds left, but none of the five officials signaled touchdown or incomplete pass as Roberts emerged from his roll on the ground, holding the ball aloft as though he scored. After 40 anxious seconds of conversation, officials ruled it incomplete, and ninth-ranked University fell from the top 10 and missed a chance to win its first league title since 1975.

Seeded fourth in the Division VIII playoffs, Laguna Hills was upset in the second round, 14-13, by eventual champion Temescal Canyon.

The Hawks had the league’s offensive player of the year, Michael Jones, a sophomore who led the county in rushing (2,350 yards). His 25 touchdowns was one fewer than Savanna senior Eric Shine.

University, with Roberts as the defensive player of the year, made its debut in the PCL after years of being overpowered in the bigger Sea View League, and it helped the program. The Trojans shared second place with Aliso Niguel after a 10-10 tie in Week 10.
