Gun Violence

* I am a police officer who patrols South-Central Los Angeles. I have an idea as to why there is a gun violence problem in L.A.
Recently, during a routine traffic stop, I discovered a loaded .38 revolver in the driver’s back pocket. A record check showed that the driver had a lengthy criminal record including two prior convictions for carrying a concealed firearm, two convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, one conviction for attempted murder and too many drug convictions to mention. The gun was also stolen.
Before his preliminary hearing, he eagerly accepted a plea-bargain offered by the district attorney’s office. The offer? Sixteen days in jail (time he had already served) and three years probation.
I don’t have a solution to gun violence but I know that things are not going to get better as long as the D.A.’s office makes deals like this one.
