L.A. Baptist Wins League Opener

Outside hitter Gloria Erickson had 17 kills to lead L.A. Baptist High to a 15-4, 15-11, 15-10 victory over Village Christian in an Alpha League opener Tuesday at L.A. Baptist.
Middle blocker Patricia Stanton had seven kills and five blocks, and setter Kerri Hazama had 33 assists for L.A. Baptist (6-1).
Jill Bussanich had seven kills for the Crusaders (4-3), and Errin Benesh had seven blocks.
Westlake d. Newbury Park, 15-6, 15-6, 15-3--Meredith Mangum had five kills and Kari Whitney and Malia Kimball each had eight digs, but the Panthers (1-6, 1-4) fell to Westlake (5-0 in league) in a Marmonte League match at Newbury Park.
Saugus d. Valencia, 15-3, 15-4, 15-4--Lauren McCartin and Cynthia Slankard each had seven kills, and Sarah Wilkin added six kills for the Centurions (4-1) in a Foothill League opener at Valencia (3-2).
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
CS Northridge d. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 15-6, 14-16, 15-13, 15-9--Nancy Ma had 25 kills and Heather Hofmans had 62 assists for the Matadors (7-8) in a nonconference match.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Westlake 15, Newbury Park 2--Erin Smith of Westlake (5-1, 4-1) improved her Marmonte League record to 15-0 with victories over Jamie Walker, 6-1, Mandy Movahhed, 6-0, and Tracy Ahles, 6-0. Smith’s sister Katy and Helena Horak also won their singles matches against the Panthers (1-7, 1-4).
Agoura 11, Royal 7--Jennifer Donahue and Angie Sveda each swept three singles sets, and the No. 1 doubles team of Sydney Mainster and Bettina Loh also swept for the Chargers (4-5, 3-2) in a Marmonte League match at Agoura.
Burroughs 14, Burbank 4--Christina Irinco and Shaland Romero led the Indians (8-2, 3-0) to a Foothill League victory at Burroughs with 6-0 sweeps in their singles matches. Also undefeated in match play was Kristina Mohos, who lost just two games.
Shantal Pershing and Audrey Kiok won their doubles matches for Burbank (3-6, 1-1).
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Ventura 10, Santa Monica 0--Goalkeeper Lori Bailey recorded her sixth shutout and Mandy Westbrook, Carrie Waller and Ana Baro each scored twice for the Pirates (8-2, 4-1) in a Western State Conference match at Ventura. The Pirates have not allowed a goal at home this season.
