Transient Arrested in Warehouse Fire

An Oxnard transient was arrested early Tuesday on suspicion of lighting a fire that caused about $5,000 in damage to an Oxnard produce warehouse.
Thomas Anthony Nevarez, 37, was apparently trying to keep himself warm just after midnight Tuesday by lighting cardboard boxes and wooden pallets next to Seaboard Produce in the 600 block of Mountain View Avenue, an Oxnard police spokesman said.
Oxnard resident Jim Dawson said he saw Nevarez light and then feed more cardboard and wood to the fire, according to an Oxnard Fire Department spokesman. As the fire grew, Dawson called police.
Firefighters doused the flames and Nevarez was arrested. He is being held in the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of arson. His bail is set at $20,000.
