BRINGING IN THE SHEAVES by Richard Higgs (Council Oaks Books: $14.95, 222 pp., illustrated, paperback original). Tired of working in his wife’s diner in Tulsa, Higgs hit the road to follow the annual wheat harvest through the Great Plains. Landing a job driving a tractor-truck, he was awed by the process of harvesting millions of tons of grain. But he learned that wheat is far less interesting than the land forms of the vast plains and the people who inhabit its tiny towns.
