Margaret Hane; Businesswoman Owned Chain of Gas Stations

Margaret Russell Bates Hane, 86, former businesswoman who owned Magnum Oil Co. service stations. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in political science from USC and worked as a reporter for the Atlanta Journal. After receiving a second master’s degree in counseling from Cal State L.A., she went into business and became owner, president and chairman of the board of the chain of gasoline stations in 1952. She later headed other small businesses and was active in several historical organizations, including Daughters of the American Colonists. On Oct. 17 in Los Angeles of complications of a stroke.
