Sales Off at Safety Components

COSTA MESA — Safety Components International Inc. posted lower profit and sales for the second fiscal quarter ended Sept. 30.
The company, which makes automotive air bags and supplies defense products, reported that net income declined 15% to $1.1 million, or 23 cents a share, from $1.3 million, or 26 cents a share, for the same period last year. Sales dropped 25% to $18.9 million from $25.3 million. The defense division’s sales for the quarter slipped to $3.3 million from $13 million. First-half net income fell 17% to $2 million, or 40 cents a share, from $2.4 million, or 50 cents a share, for the like period a year ago. Sales were down 29% to $35 million from $49 million.
