The Coast Guard is still searching for a merchant ship that collided with a 58-foot fishing vessel Thursday night near Santa Cruz Island.
The Ventura-based Fearless Jane was heavily damaged in the 6:30 p.m. crash and was being readied for repair Friday night in Ventura Harbor.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Jamie Devitt identified the crew as Charles Johnson, 26, Aaron Commins, 25, Chad Hegwer, 21, and Denny Coristu, 25, all of Alaska. No one was injured in the accident.
The boat’s owner, Daniel F. Veerhusen of Ventura was not on board.
According to Devitt, the Fearless Jane was headed to Santa Cruz Island from Ventura when it collided with the unidentified merchant vessel.
Two fishing vessels, the Sherry Rene and the Allison Jane, arrived on the scene shortly after the collision and helped the Fearless Jane crew make temporary repairs to their vessel, Devitt said. With the Coast Guard escort and its own power, the Fearless Jane returned to Ventura Harbor about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
