NONCONFERENCE
* No. 1 KANSAS (6-0) at No. 17 UCLA (1-1)
Time--12:30 p.m. TV--Channel 2. Radio--XTRA (690), KIEV (870).
The Bruins will need to step up their performance to stay with the Jayhawks, who keep winning without senior point guard Jacque Vaughn, who has a wrist injury. How does Kansas do it? Mostly with clutch offensive play by forwards Paul Pierce and Raef LaFrentz, and serious defense. Opponents are shooting less than 37%. One key matchup: UCLA center Jelani McCoy, who scored 14 points and had eight rebounds against Kansas in UCLA’s loss last season, against 6-foot-11 senior Scot Pollard. If McCoy can maintain anything close to the efficiency he has shown in the first two games--he is averaging 18.5 points on 89.5% shooting--the Bruins may have a chance to wear down the road-worn Jayhawks.
