Houser Leads Laguna Hills in Rout of Mater Dei

Whitney Houser had 21 points and nine rebounds as Laguna Hills beat Mater Dei, 63-38, in a pool-play game in the Woodbridge High girls’ basketball tournament.

Laguna Hills took control by outscoring the Monarchs, 20-2, in the second quarter. Tayyiba Haneef had 13 points, nine rebounds and seven blocked shots for Laguna Hills (3-0).

B.J. Day scored 10 points for Mater Dei (2-1), the defending Division I state champion.

In another Woodbridge tournament game:

Woodbridge 70, Perris 38--Krissy Duperron scored 18 points in the rout. Debby Caine had 11 points, including three three-pointers. The Warriors play Laguna Hills at 7:30 tonight in the championship game at Woodbridge.

In the Irvine Invitational:

Pacifica 52, Cerritos Gahr 49--Heather Green scored 23 points and Jaymee Pendergast added 22 for Pacifica (2-0) in a semifinal victory.

In the Carson City tournament:

Marina 52, Reno (Nev.) McQueen 50--Karyn Fierst made a 15-footer with two seconds remaining to break a 50-50 tie for Marina (3-0) in a semifinal victory.

In the Mayfair tournament:

Ocean View 73, Tustin 21--Anna Lembke scored 25 points for Ocean View (3-0) in a semifinal victory.

Calvary Chapel 44, Sun Valley Village Christian 34--Janelle McConnell scored 22 points to lead Calvary Chapel before fouling out early in fourth quarter for Calvary Chapel (3-1).

Estancia 54, Lakewood St. Joseph’s 48--Jill Black led Estancia (3-1) with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Stapleton added 17 points for Estancia, which will play for fifth place today.

In the Fresno boys’ soccer tournament:

Capistrano Valley 4, Fresno Sanger 1--Phil Lantini scored two goals to help Capistrano Valley (3-0-1) advance to today’s quarterfinals.

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Brea Olinda 4, Cerritos 0--Shawn Tellez scored three goals in the victory for Brea Olinda (2-0-1). The hat trick gave Tellez his sixth goal in only three games.

Trabuco Hills 2, Edison 1--Jay Hunger scored his second goal in the 58th minute to break a 1-1 tie for host Trabuco Hills (2-0). Grant Thompson scored a first-half goal for Edison (0-2).

Westminster 1, Marina 0--Leo Gimenez took a pass from Chris Brewer and headed the ball into the goal at the 30th minute for Westminster (2-0).
