Hammond Kicks Saugus Into Gear

Jeff Hammond scored two first-half goals and Stefan Olsson scored in the second half for Saugus High in a 3-1 victory over Glendale on Saturday in pool play at the Burroughs boys’ soccer tournament.
Defending champion Saugus (3-0) took advantage of Glendale’s inexperienced goalkeeper, David Aguilar, and smothered the Dynamiters with a tight defense.
Hammond opened the scoring in the 36th minute when he took a pass from Kevin Bonilla and scored from a severe angle.
Hammond scored again a minute later when he headed in a kick by J.D. Rotteau from 15 yards.
Armen Akhverdyan scored for Glendale (1-1) in the 54th minute.
In other Burroughs tournament games:
Kennedy 1, Valencia 0--Greg Avila converted a penalty kick in the 72nd minute.
Royal 3, Alhambra 0--Mike Ranier and Dan Wilson scored in the first half and John Billin in the second for the Highlanders.
Lakewood 1, Buena 0--The Bulldogs (2-1) lost in a shootout, 3-1, at the Millikan tournament. Earlier, the Bulldogs (2-0) used first-half goals by Mike Bradbury, Randy Glaser and Ramin Salehi-Rad to beat Artesia, 4-2.
Lancaster 1, Simi Valley 0--Sophomore Eric Sundberg scored the winning goal in a shootout for the Eagles in the quarterfinals of the Lancaster tournament.
David Stockdale had 11 saves for Lancaster (2-1).
Simi Valley (1-1) held the Eagles to one shot.
Agoura 1, Dos Pueblos 1--Chris Mooney scored in the 48th minute for the Chargers in pool play of the Calabasas tournament.
Rio Mesa 3, Camarillo 0--Jaime Ambriz scored two goals for the Spartans (2-1) in pool play of the Calabasas tournament.
MENS’ BASKETBALL
Ventura 88, Southwest 76--Isaac Taylor had 19 points for the Pirates (7-3) in the championship game of the Oxnard tournament.
Chris Clayton, who scored 14 points, was named most valuable player.
Valley 71, Cypress 66--Pierre Elize had 21 points, 10 rebounds and six steals as the Monarchs won the Las Vegas tournament.
Valley (8-1) won its eighth straight game, using a 14-2 run in the last six minutes to pull away.
Oke Ogoke and Carlton Fraser were selected to the all-tournament team and Elize was most valuable player.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Valley 87, Cerritos 76--Jacque Tennies had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Monarchs and Shawanda Hotchkiss added 17 points in the Sequoias tournament.
Valley (5-3) will play today in the fifth-place game.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Westlake 63, Ridgeview 58--Jake Stewart had 27 points and 11 rebounds and was MVP of the Morro Bay tournament for the Warriors.
Ian Markham and Jeff Treuting also made the all-tournament team for Westlake (3-0).
San Marcos 47, Crespi 45--Mark Oden made two free throws with 10 seconds left to give the Royals the consolation title of the San Luis Obispo tournament.
The Celts couldn’t get a shot off before time expired.
Ron Quarterman had 13 points and nine rebounds for Crespi (1-2).
Bell-Jeff 65, North Hollywood 62--Ruben Douglas scored 24 points and sank a three-pointer from midcourt as time expired for the Guards (1-0). The Huskies (0-2) tied the score, 62-62, with four seconds left on Keron Wilkerson’s two free throws.
Corona del Mar 63, Verdugo Hills 39--Caleb Peterson scored 10 points for the Dons (0-4) in the seventh-place game of the Newport Harbor tournament.
Temescal Canyon 72, Nordhoff 53--Allen Thorton scored 22 points for the Rangers in the third-place game of the Nordhoff tournament.
Viewpoint 50, Windward 37--Rami Shaarawy scored 12 points and made the all-tournament team as Viewpoint (2-2) took fifth place in the Providence tournament.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Oxnard 44, Fountain Valley 40--Jaline Bradley scored 20 points for the Yellowjackets (2-2) in the fifth-place game of the Woodbridge tournament.
Trabuco Hills 47, Thousand Oaks 45--The Lancers (0-1) fell behind, 21-8, in the first quarter, but nearly caught the Mustangs (1-0) in a first-round University tournament game.
Jenn Detmer had 15 points for Thousand Oaks.
Nordhoff 40, Victor Valley 38--Erin Barker scored 21 points and was MVP of the South Bakersfield tournament.
Nell Becker, an all-tournament selection, hit two free throws with a minute left for the Rangers (3-0).
Cornerstone Christian 48, Oak Park 38--Julie Seifert had 16 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and six steals as the Eagles (3-1) won the consolation title of the Fillmore tournament.
Montclair Prep 35, Marymount 30--Laura Power had 17 points and nine rebounds as the Mounties took third place in the Buckley tournament.
Louisville 64, Saugus 48--Peggy Johnson had 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Royals (3-1) took third in the Fillmore tournament.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Chaminade 3, Immaculate Heart 0--Lia Cummins scored a goal as the Eagles (3-0-1) advanced to the quarterfinals of the El Segundo tournament.
Buena 3, Westridge 2--Sylvia Naungayan scored the winning goal in a shootout for the Bulldogs in pool play of the South Torrance tournament.
Earlier, Shannon Merten scored twice as Buena (2-0) defeated Culver City, 4-0.
