* 1/2 Various artists, “Horn Rock Bands,” K-Tel. For anyone who ever marveled at the horn backing on a great R&B; record, 10 tracks by horn-driven rock bands might seem tempting. Think twice. There’s nothing wrong with horns in rock as long as they are used to provide emotional punctuation, but when they are used as the centerpiece, the sound can come across as labored. You can see the promise of horn rock in the Electric Flag’s “Killing Floor” and Tower of Power’s “What Is Hip?” But you hear the clumsiness of it in all too many of these efforts, such as the Ides of March’s “Vehicle” and Chase’s “Get It On.”--R.H.
