Complex Combines Housing, Supermarket

The new Adams West Senior Housing and Triangle Market Plaza, an unusual pairing of low-income housing for independent seniors and a 10,000-square-foot supermarket, was dedicated Thursday in the West Adams district.

The complex is home to more than 50 seniors, many of whom were residents of the community.

The $6-million project, started 12 years ago, was developed by the Bedford Group, a family-owned company, and funded by the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency.

Located on the corner of Adams Boulevard and Western Avenue, Adams West is made up of 52 one-bedroom units that are rented for between $375 to $475, said manager Betty Gouche. “We are filled with a waiting list,” she said.

Among the residents, who started moving in to the apartments in October, is a 102-year-old woman and a couple. “The lady is 95 and the man is 97,” Gouche said.

The senior housing project also includes a community center, an arts and crafts room, a laundry room and underground parking for the seniors and supermarket customers.

In April, several community members expressed opposition to a beer and wine permit that was awarded to the plaza’s supermarket, said Edward Saulet, project manager for the CRA’s Normandie 5 Redevelopment Area, which includes Adams West.

The City Council later revoked the permit. No alcohol is sold at the market, Saulet said.
