An 18-year-old Orange man was in stable condition Friday after a train struck his car when he drove around the railroad crossing arm at Chapman Avenue and Atchison Street on Thursday night, police said.
Jose Vasquez was driving east on Chapman Avenue when he dodged the crossing arm and was hit by a northbound Amtrak train about 9:55 p.m., Orange police said. A teenage passenger managed to jump out of the 1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass before impact and was uninjured.
Vasquez was taken to UCI Medical Center, where a spokeswoman said he was in “fair and stable” condition Friday.
An investigation is continuing into whether Vasquez was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident, police said.
