Esperanza Boys Upset Bakersfield Centennial

Ryan Deschenes scored the winning goal with eight minutes left to play as eighth-ranked Esperanza upset Bakersfield Centennial, 3-2, Friday in the second round of the Marina boys’ soccer tournament.
Centennial is the defending Central Section Sequoia Division champion.
The Aztecs (10-1-1) led at halftime, 2-1, on goals by Josh Deits and Aaron Colcacin.
Centennial tied the score with 20 minutes left in the second half on a goal by Jason Jasper.
In other tournament games:
Fountain Valley 1, Palos Verdes Peninsula 0--Ryan Schmalz scored a second-half goal for Fountain Valley (7-1-2).
In a first-round game, Fountain Valley tied Servite, 1-1, but advanced on penalty kicks, with Ryan Futagaki scoring the winner.
San Clemente 6, Huntington Beach 0--Marty Sullivan scored three goals in a consolation victory for fifth-ranked San Clemente (8-0-2), which tied Lawndale Leuzinger, 2-2, in a first-round game, but Leuzinger advanced on penalty kicks, 5-3.
In the quarterfinals of the Trabuco Hills tournament:
Santa Ana 2, El Toro 2 (Santa Ana advanced on penalty kicks, 6-5)--The Saints, ranked seventh in the county, advanced to the semifinals by narrowly edging second-ranked El Toro in the shootout.
In other quarterfinal games, third-ranked Capistrano Valley and sixth-ranked Woodbridge tied, 2-2, but Capistrano Valley advanced on penalty kicks. Top-ranked Orange defeated Santa Margarita, 4-1.
In the quarterfinals of the Excalibur girls’ soccer tournament:
Esperanza 0, Marina 0 (Esperanza advances on penalty kicks, 3-1)--Niki Rime, Melissa Nevin and Shannon Moore accounted for the three penalty goals.
Esperanza (9-2-1) will play Dana Hills, which advanced on penalty kicks against Los Alamitos, in a semifinal game at 10 a.m. today. Tournament officials, however, have announced that today’s games might be postponed depending on field conditions.
In the Ocean View girls’ soccer tournament:
Mater Dei 3, Laguna Beach 0--Alison Fennell scored two goals for Mater Dei (6-2) in pool play. Kelly Kersch had three saves for the shutout.
The Monarchs recorded another shutout in the first round, beating Ocean View, 4-0.
