Teen Recovering After Collision With Officer

A 14-year-old bicyclist who collided with a police officer’s patrol car Tuesday night suffered a broken collarbone and is recovering at home, officials said.

The teenager was pedaling on Palma Vista Street about 8 p.m. when he was hit by the officer, who had just cleared a call at a nearby shopping center and was patrolling southbound on Euclid Street. The youth was not identified. Garden Grove police said the 29-year-old officer has been on the force nearly three years.

“Apparently the juvenile just came straight across the street,” Lt. John Woods said of the collision. “It was dark, in mid-street. . . . They likely didn’t see each other in time.”

The bicyclist was treated at UCI Medical Center in Orange and released. He suffered cuts on his head and arms in addition to the collarbone injury.

The officer was treated at Garden Grove Hospital and Medical Center for cuts on his face and eyes. Police said the windshield of the patrol car shattered during the collision, showing the officer with glass. He was recovering at home Wednesday, Woods said.
