Carla Naranjo was named to head the union-organizing drive by the garment industry union UNITE at Guess Inc. in Los Angeles. The 28-year-old Naranjo, who previously headed UNITE’s organizing efforts in Texas, said she will also continue efforts to organize workers at sewing contractor shops doing work for Guess. She replaces David Young, a UNITE veteran who resigned last month and who had directed the campaign ever since initial plans were drafted in late 1994. Naranjo said she expects to be able to hire more organizers to boost the organizing campaign. The targets are the estimated 500 to 600 warehouse and production workers at Guess’ downtown operation and several thousand more garment sewers and cutters at Southern California contractor shops.
