South Coast Plaza Seeks Exception to Rule on Banners

South Coast Plaza is seeking an exception to city regulations so it can fly banners to promote its 30th anniversary this month.
If approved by the City Council, 60 flags would be attached to poles along Anton Boulevard, Avenue of the Arts, Town Center Drive, Sunflower Avenue and Bristol and Bear streets. Text would read: “South Coast Plaza: 1967-1997, International Destination and Quality Is South Coast Plaza.”
Anniversary activities are March 7 to Nov. 10. City regulations now allow such banners to fly for only 30 days, but exceptions have been made in the past for signs promoting Taste of Costa Mesa in April and May, United Way in September and Children’s Hospital of Orange County in October.
Most recently, the Orange County Performing Arts Center was allowed to break with the one-month rule to promote Tuesday and Wednesday’s performances by the Vienna Philharmonic, hailed by many as the world’s best orchestra.
Council members plan to review the request for banners at their 6:30 p.m. meeting Monday. Information: (714) 754-5223.
