THOUSAND OAKS — Moorpark High outscored Dominguez, 15-4, in the fourth quarter and advanced to the Southern Section Division II-A girls’ basketball final with a 52-42 victory Wednesday night at Thousand Oaks High.
Sophomore Damaris Hinojosa collected 23 points and 16 rebounds for Moorpark.
The Musketeers will play Brea Olinda in the final at 2:45 p.m. Saturday at The Pyramid in Long Beach.
After a slow start, Moorpark (25-2) took control in the second quarter, using a full-court press. The Musketeers led, 31-21, at halftime.
When point guard Tracey Milburn was benched after picking up her fourth foul at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Musketeers looked to Hinojosa again.
“Coach said, ‘You’re the one now,’ ” Hinojosa said, referring to Moorpark Coach Brent Milburn’s decision to put her in charge of the offense.
Hinojosa said the last time she played the point guard position was during summer league.
“We were tired and we lost control [of the game], but we knew we had to come through,” Hinojosa said.
The Musketeers did lose control, and the lead, after being outscored, 17-6, in the third quarter, and trailed, 38-37, heading into the fourth quarter.
But Hinojosa made a steal and a layup to begin the fourth quarter, giving Moorpark a lead it never relinquished.
Hinojosa had 11 steals and six blocked shots. Milburn finished with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
