Sickler Vaults Up the List to 11 Feet

Heather Sickler of Camarillo High was a double winner, including an 11-foot pole vault, and the Scorpions scored a 75-51 nonleague girls’ track and field victory over Ventura on Thursday at Camarillo.

Sickler’s vault moves her to second on the all-time region list behind Bridget Pearson of Hoover, who cleared 11-8 as a freshman last year. Sickler also won the high jump with a height of five feet.

Trisha Sutton was also a double winner for the Scorpions, winning the 100 meters in 12.7 and the 200 in 26.2.

In other track meets:

Burbank 71, Glendale 61--Senior Tim Leahy was a triple winner for the host Bulldogs (1-0) in a nonleague opener.

Leahy was clocked in two minutes, six seconds in the 800 meters, 4:46.7 in the 1,600 and 10:36.1 in the 3,200.

Channel Islands 61, Santa Paula 57, Santa Clara 23--Senior Michael Jackson clocked 10.9 in the 100 meters, won the high jump at 6-2 and anchored the Raiders’ 400-meter relay team that was timed in 44.9 in a nonleague meet at Channel Islands (1-0).

Notre Dame 91, Westlake 27--Justin Fargas won the 100 meters in 10.6 and the triple jump in 43-9 for the Knights (1-0) in a nonleague boys’ meet at Westlake (0-1).

Chris Forde was also a double-winner, with a 22.2 time in the 200 meters and a 49.9 in the 400.

SOFTBALL

El Camino Real 8, Monroe 2--Ramona Shelburne had two hits, including a run-scoring double , for the defending City Section 4-A Division champion Conquistadores (1-0) in a nonconference game at El Camino Real.

Lupe Brambilia hit a home run for Monroe.

Canoga Park 9, University 1--Sophomore left-hander Jenny Pitillo struck out 16 and did not allow a walk for the Hunters (1-0) in a one-hitter at Canoga Park.

Carina Leon had three hits and two RBIs and Vicki Rodriguez hit a solo home run and drove in two runs.

Kennedy 10, Grant 0--Sandra Durazo had 16 strikeouts in a one-hitter that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Christina Garcia had two hits and two RBIs and Carin Garcia added a triple and two RBIs for the Cougars (1-0).

Taft 6, Van Nuys 5--Tera Burton had two hits and stole home for the Toreadors (1-0) in a four-run second inning of a nonconference game at Van Nuys.

North Hollywood 10, Palisades 5--Claudia Villa’s two-run home run highlighted the Huskies’ nonconference season opener at North Hollywood.

Takui Karapogosyan had two doubles for the Huskies.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Birmingham 4, Verdugo Hills 3--No. 1 singles player Anthony Gabriele won in three sets and the No. 1 doubles team of Greg Goodfried and Josh Smith swept their opponent for the Braves (1-0).

Notre Dame 10, Canyon 8--Senior Jason Rudolph swept at No. 1 singles to lead the Knights in a nonleague match.

Rio Mesa 17, Newbury Park 1--Juan Gonzalez, Tyrel Carson and Quinn Borchard all swept in singles for the Spartans (2-0) in a nonleague match at Rio Mesa.
