Haight’s Net Play Elevates Highland

Tom Haight had 18 kills in 25 attempts and Highland High defeated Palmdale, 15-1, 15-12, 15-9, in a Golden League boys’ volleyball opener Wednesday night at Palmdale.
The 6-foot-5 Haight helped the Bulldogs (4-1) to a quick start.
“He was super-focused,” Highland Coach Mike Bird said. “He was the man tonight.”
In the first game, Highland did not have a hitting error in 22 attempts.
Aaron Winchester had six kills for Palmdale (2-2), which took a 12-7 lead in the second game.
In other boys’ volleyball matches:
Quartz Hill d. Antelope Valley, 15-8, 15-5, 17-15--Darren Haub had 15 kills in 20 attempts in a Golden League opener at Antelope Valley.
Darin Link added nine kills in 10 attempts for the Rebels (5-1), ranked 10th in Southern Section Division I.
Camarillo d. Newbury Park, 14-16, 12-15, 16-14, 15-0, 15-10--Matt Fix had 17 kills for the Scorpions (5-2, 3-2) in a Marmonte League match at Camarillo.
Arcadia d. Hoover 15-13, 17-15, 7-15, 17-15--Nick Marbach collected 35 kills, Pawel Orzechowski had 33 and Andrew Russell added 19 for Hoover (4-3) in a Pacific League opener at Arcadia.
Arcadia is ranked seventh in Division I.
Taft d. Kennedy, 15-12, 8-15, 15-8, 15-8--Joe Nargi had 25 kills and Elan Yakovee added 10 for the Toreadors (5-0, 2-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Taft.
Jeff Toon led Kennedy (3-2, 0-2) with 13 kills and six blocks.
Hart d. Saugus, 14-16, 15-11, 15-9, 6-15, 15-4--Brett Martin had 20 kills and 14 blocks and Adam Bazar added 18 kills for the Indians (3-3) in a Foothill League opener at Saugus.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Rio Mesa 13, Thousand Oaks 5--The No. 2 doubles team of Tyrel Carson and Chris Worthington and the No. 3 team of Jason Ho and Derrick Goldie each posted 3-0 records for the Spartans (10-1) in the nonleague match at Rio Mesa.
Camarillo 16, Channel Islands 2--Jason Gaona and Mike Mancini swept singles play for the Scorpions (8-3, 6-1) in a Marmonte League match at Channel Islands.
Granada Hills 6, Birmingham 1--Ashwin Reddy and Matt Weiss won singles matches for the Highlanders (4-0, 3-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Birmingham.
GIRLS’ TRACK
Nordhoff 103, Cate 25; Nordhoff 117, Thacher 11--Bridie Hatch won two events and ran on two victorious relay teams for the Rangers in a nonleague meet at Nordhoff.
Hatch won the 330-yard low hurdles in 47.3 seconds and the long jump at 17 feet 2 inches.
