Ex-Soldier Guilty in Racist Murders

Former Ft. Bragg paratrooper Malcolm Wright was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder in the shooting of a black couple that prompted a nationwide investigation of racism in the Army. Wright also was found guilty on one count of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder for the deaths of Jackie Burden and Michael James, who were gunned down as they walked in Fayetteville, N.C., on Dec. 7, 1995. A hearing to determine whether Wright, 22, of Lexington, Ky., who is white, will be executed or spend his life in prison was scheduled to begin Monday.
