Ojai Science Teacher Receives $9,300 Grant

Larry Heitz, a science teacher at Monica Ros School in Ojai, was awarded a $9,300 Toyota TAPESTRY grant, which honors educators for creative teaching methods. The grant will be used to purchase video and other equipment for science projects. Heitz, who has been teaching for 30 years, was one of 50 teachers honored nationwide. There were more than 1,350 applicants. The grants are administered by the National Science Teachers Assn.
2 Conejo Thrift Shop Volunteers Honored * Gary and Mary Jane Jones were honored with a Community Conscience Award for their volunteer work at the Conejo Valley Senior Concern Thrift Shop. Mary Jane’s duties at the shop include manager one day a week, while her husband’s tasks include drawing up remodeling plans for the store. Community Conscience is a nonprofit organization providing support to social service agencies.
Oxnard Porcelain Artist Wins Award * Helen Humes of Oxnard received the Honored Artist Award during a recent convention hosted by the San Francisco China Painters club. Humes is a member of the Seashore Porcelain Artists club in Oxnard. The award is given annually to honor an artist’s contributions to the art of china painting.
Nurse Group Names Volunteer of the Year * Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Assn. honored Lynn Maulding of Ventura with its Roy M. Carlson Volunteer of the Year Award, recognizing her hours of service and dedication. The nursing association is a nonprofit home health and hospice agency, serving Ventura County residents for 50 years, regardless of their ability to pay. The award was established in honor of Roy M. Carlson who served on the LMVNA Board of Directors from 1974 until his death in 1995.
