Cradle Pleases Baby and Parents

Nothing soothes a fussy baby better than rocking in a cradle, so do-it-yourselfers with babies in their future may want to tackle this project. It’s easy to build, and it may just become a family heirloom.
The project features traditional country styling and the warm, lasting beauty of pine. It has no sharp edges or points, and its spindle sides allow air to circulate freely.
The cradle’s pieces are cut almost entirely from a single 1-by-12 pine board. Other materials include dowel pins, ready-made spindles, a wooden ball, hardwood plugs, screws, glue and finish.
Almost all of the pieces--including the end posts, stretcher, brackets, base, footboard and headboard--are traced from full-size patterns, making them easy to size. After cutting out the pieces, assemble the cradle portion first with wood screws and glue, then the base section. Suspend the cradle from the end posts, sand and apply finish.
The completed project measures 41 inches long by 30 inches tall by 22 inches wide.
