Osborne Sidelined by Groin Injury

The St. Louis Cardinals put pitcher Donovan Osborne on the disabled list Saturday because of a groin injury.

Osborne aggravated the injury in Friday’s 7-4 loss to the New York Mets. He first experienced pain in his groin 10 days ago in a start against the Dodgers. The 27-year-old left-hander pitched two innings Friday despite feeling pain while warming up.

Osborne is 1-2 with a 3.60 earned-run average this season. He was 13-9 in 1996 and led Cardinals’ starters with a 3.53 ERA. Osborne sat out the 1994 season because of an injury to his pitching shoulder.

The Montreal Expos put third baseman Shane Andrews on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Thursday, because of an inflamed left shoulder.

Andrews was originally sent to triple-A Ottawa after Thursday’s game against Houston, but rules prohibit a team from sending an injured player to the minors, unless it is for rehabilitation purposes. Andrews will meet with Dr. Larry Coughlin in Montreal on Tuesday to be reevaluated.

Andrews, hitting .203 with four home runs and nine RBIs, received a cortisone injection behind his shoulder on April 21.

New York Met pitcher Bill Pulsipher, on the 15-day disabled list because of a torn ligament in his left elbow, was sent to St. Lucie of the Florida State League.

New York General Manager Joe McIlvaine said that the Mets made the move to help the left-hander’s control problems. Pulsipher had been working out at the Mets’ spring training camp.
