Jewel Continues Strong Swim Performance

Carol Jewel of Newport Beach won three events Sunday in the women’s 50-54 age group division in the Southern Pacific Masters Short Course Yards Championships at the Heritage Park Aquatics Complex in Irvine.

She won four events Saturday, then took first in the 200 freestyle and the 50 and 200 butterfly Sunday. Her performance capped an impressive weekend for her and her husband, Bill, who is the men’s swimming coach at Golden West College. His team won its third consecutive state title Saturday.

Madeleine Miller of the Coast Masters also was impressive. Miller, 86, a resident of Mission Viejo, took firsts in the 50 and 100 backstroke, the 200 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke in the women’s 85-89 division. She won three events Saturday.

Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen, a member of the San Diego Swim Masters club, set two national records in the women’s 35-39 division. Her records came in the 200 butterfly (2:04.88) and the 400 individual medley (4:24.19). She also won the 50 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke.

Pipes-Neilsen only took part in the meet for one day because she was representing Palomar College at the state community college swim meet Thursday through Saturday.

Laurel Hooper of Irvine Novaquatics won three events Sunday, in addition to winning five Saturday. Hooper took first in the 200 freestyle, the 200 butterfly and the 400 individual medley.
