Golf Course Builder Seeking Panel’s OK

Plans to build two 18-hole public golf courses in the northern part of the city will go before the Planning Commission tonight.
Big Sky Country Club Inc. is poised to build the two courses--designed by renowned architect Pete Dye--in Dry and Tapo canyons. Together, they would cover about 220 acres and include a common clubhouse, driving range and several cart storage buildings.
Several years ago, developers drew up plans to build about 400 homes in the portion of the Whiteface Specific Plan area where the golf courses would be built. But a weak housing market in the early 1990s halted construction plans, said Simi Valley Assistant City Manager Don Penman.
According to a city staff report, Dye has designed courses throughout the U.S., including in Palm Springs and Moreno Valley. The report states that the courses would be a “positive economic force,” drawing businesses and groups to play golf here.
Mike Kerney, executive vice president at Big Sky, said the company plans to start building the courses as soon as it gets through the city’s approval process.
“We’ll try to have them open in early summer of next year,” Kerney said. The Planning Commission meets at 7 p.m. at 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.
