Red Sox Lose Avery, Gain Wakefield

Left-hander Steve Avery was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday by the Boston Red Sox, who activated right-hander Tim Wakefield.

Avery, who strained his groin Saturday at Texas, is 2-1 with a 5.87 earned-run average in six starts. Wakefield (1-1), who reported stiffness in his right elbow during his last start April 14, will take Avery’s turn in the rotation Thursday against Minnesota.

Toronto right-hander Erik Hanson has torn cartilage in his right shoulder and said he probably won’t be back the rest of the season. He will undergo further examinations the next few days and surgery is likely Monday or Tuesday.

The New York Yankees and Adidas filed an antitrust suit against major league baseball in federal court, claiming the sport interfered with their $95 million, 10-year sponsorship agreement.

The Yankees and Adidas claimed baseball threatened to sue the sportswear company and attempted to stop joint advertising and the sale of merchandise at Yankee Stadium, the New York Times reported. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court in Tampa, Fla.

Mark McGwire of the Oakland Athletics was ejected in the first inning of Tuesday night’s game at Milwaukee when he argued with plate umpire Rich Garcia over a called third strike.
