Chatsworth Tunes Up for Defending Champ

Stephen Wiessner had 15 kills and Chatsworth High defeated Westchester, 15-1, 15-4, 15-12, in the first round of the City Section 4-A Division boys’ volleyball playoffs Wednesday night at Chatsworth.
The sixth-seeded Chancellors (10-4) will play three-time defending 4-A champion University in the quarterfinals Friday at University.
“We’ve been looking forward to playing Uni for a long time,” Wiessner said. “We’ll have to go out like we did tonight, full intensity and full focus.”
Brian Fox had nine kills and Chris Wilson added seven for the Chancellors, who won the first game in 11 minutes.
In other City Section first-round playoff matches:
University d. Cleveland, 15-6, 15-10, 15-11--Josh Shasky had 15 kills and UCLA-bound Mark Williams added 13 to lead the third-seeded Warriors (10-5) in a 4-A match at University.
Amad Yakhi had 23 kills and Chang Meang had 20 assists for No. 14 Cleveland (4-11).
Jefferson d. Kennedy, 15-2, 15-11, 15-5--Jeff Toon had 16 kills and three blocks for the No. 10 Golden Cougars (8-6) in a 4-A match at Jefferson.
Venice d. Taft, 15-10, 15-6, 7-15, 3-15, 18-16--Joe Nargi had 25 kills and five blocks but the 12th-seeded Toreadors (8-6) lost in a 4-A match at No. 5 Venice.
Elan Yakovee had 11 kills and six aces for Taft.
Sylmar d. Fairfax, 3-15, 15-4, 15-13, 15-5--Ervin Gonzalez had 11 kills and seven blocks and Fabian Landeros had 35 assists for the ninth-seeded Spartans (9-5) in a 3-A match at Fairfax.
Tony Linares added eight kills for Sylmar, which will play at top-seeded Eagle Rock on Friday.
Van Nuys d. Sherman Oaks CES, 15-4, 15-11, 15-1--Allen Chiu had 17 kills and three aces and Sam Park had 33 assists for the second-seeded Wolves (11-2) in a 3-A match at Van Nuys.
Grant d. L.A. CES, 15-7, 15-9, 15-1--Eric Gallarza had eight aces and five kills for the fourth-seeded Lancers (9-2) in a 3-A match at Grant.
Steven Ross added six kills for Grant, which will play host to Garfield on Friday.
Monroe d. Belmont, 15-11, 15-8, 12-15, 6-15, 15-4--Elmer Flamenco had 20 kills for the sixth-seeded Vikings (9-5) in a 3-A match at Monroe.
Raymund Golez added 12 kills for Monroe.
Garfield d. Canoga Park, 11-15, 15-11, 15-5, 15-13--The 12th-seeded Hunters lost a 3-A match at Garfield.
