Landfill Fees

Re “Supervisors Trim County’s Landfill Fees,” April 9: The Orange County supervisors are sending a wrong message to cities, residents and businesses when they lowered the landfill dumping fees. Their new message now is it’s OK to be wasteful; recycling isn’t necessary.
The supervisors should have structured the fees to encourage recycling and reuse. They should have reduced the rate to $22 per ton, up to a certain tonnage per capita; the rate would increase dramatically if the weight limit is exceeded. This would provide incentives to wasteful individuals and not punish conservation-minded citizens and businesses. A premium should be charged for foreign waste, or importation should be abolished.
By the way, most landfills were once beautiful gullies and canyons.
