Simpson Wears Ragged Pants to Hearing, Says He Has No Money

From Associated Press

O.J. Simpson, who showed up for a court hearing in ragged pants with a hole in the back, said Friday that he has no money and would have to move out of his Brentwood mansion because of the wrongful-death damage award against him.

“I know I’m broke. I know I’m retired,” he told reporters after a second day of talks with lawyers trying to collect $33.5 million from him. Asked if he would move, Simpson said: “It’s emotional a little bit, but I’m prepared to move.”

A lawyer for the murder victims’ families said Simpson was not as broke as he claimed. “I should be so flat broke!” said Gary Caris, who represents Fred Goldman, father of victim Ronald Lyle Goldman.

Caris said he was pleased with information handed over Friday. “Between the documents we received and Mr. Simpson’s testimony, I think we made a lot of headway,” he said.

Simpson was found not guilty by a criminal jury in 1995 of the 1994 killings of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Goldman, but this year was found liable for their deaths in a civil case.

Simpson appeared for Friday’s hearing in slacks with a hole near the back pocket, and was not wearing a watch or other jewelry. A source close to the case said he could have been forced to surrender the items had he worn them.

The hearing between plaintiffs’ lawyers and attorneys for Simpson will continue June 27.
