Moorpark Urges End to Abatement Panel

MOORPARK — After months of discussion, Moorpark City Council members Wednesday unanimously called for an end to the embattled Moorpark Mosquito Abatement District.
Council members voted to petition the Local Agency Formation Commission to dissolve the district, which combats insect pests. The district has been criticized for amassing a $1.4-million reserve and outliving its usefulness.
Earlier in the afternoon several council members met with representatives from the district’s board of trustees. Board Chairman Jim Hartley said he will discuss dissolving the district at the mosquito board’s next meeting.
Newly appointed board member Eloise Brown had already said she would ask the board to vote itself out of a job at the meeting.
A public vote on the issue may still be necessary. If the board votes unanimously for dissolution, LAFCO can move forward on the proposal without calling for a referendum vote.
If a majority of the board votes for dissolution, the matter would still go to LAFCO.
