Panel Hears Concerns on Proposed Theater

An Ocean Park neighborhood group presented its concerns about a contentious building proposal to the Santa Monica Planning Commission this week.
The proposal to change the Edgemar building from a museum to a live performance theater and increase the size of a restaurant there sparked a heated debate in the community.
Activists are particularly concerned about a portion of the proposal that calls for a zoning change from residential to commercial, said Gerda Newbold, a spokeswoman for the Ocean Park Community Organization. The group is also opposed to changing the museum into a live theater facility unless provisions are made to ensure that noise and traffic do not greatly increase, Newbold said.
