Astros Acquire Outfielder Carr

The Houston Astros acquired outfielder Chuck Carr, who had been released by Milwaukee on May 17, and assigned him to triple-A New Orleans. He was the Brewers’ leadoff hitter and starting center fielder last season before sustaining a season-ending knee injury.

The Astros also placed left-handed pitcher Tom Martin on the 15-day disabled list and purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Mike Magnante from triple-A New Orleans.

Credit Butch Huskey for supplying much of the offense for the upstart New York Mets. In his last 20 games, Huskey is 24 for 66 for a .364 batting average with six home runs and 16 RBIs.

Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones continues to be mired in a horrible slump. Jones, who batted .309 with 30 home runs and 110 RBIs last season, is six for 41 (.146) during the past 10 games and hasn’t had an RBI since May 19.

On the hurt, but not quite ready for the disabled list: Red first baseman Hal Morris has a tight right hamstring and was a late scratch and did not play against Chicago.. . . Florida shortstop Edgar Renteria sat out because of a mild sprain in his left knee. Atlanta catcher Javy Lopez did not play because of a sore right hand.
