Hearing Will Focus on Proposition 218

In an effort to comply with the new law, the City Council will hold a public hearing tonight on Proposition 218, a ballot measure passed in November that requires cities to get approval from local property owners for assessments.

Councilman Gene Wisner said the hearing will be informational and the council will not vote on the matter.

The hearing may help the affected parties decide how they will cast ballots either affirming the existence of the city’s landscaping and lighting assessment that brings in $4 million a year.

Ballots were sent out in May to all the town’s property owners to vote on the assessment. Ballots must be marked and returned by July 1.

City officials in Yorba Linda said that if the assessments are eliminated by voters, some property owners will have smaller tax bills. But the city stands to lose about 25% of its general fund budget, meaning the smaller bills could come at the expense of municipal services.

The council meets at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 4845 Casa Loma Ave. Information: (714) 961-7100.
