Dream Shot Makes Singh’s Win Easier

Associated Press

After three days of rain and delays, Vijay Singh won the Memorial Tournament with one swing.

His first shot Monday--a three-wood from 231 yards on the par-five 11th hole--splashed down a foot and a half from the cup. His tap-in eagle gave him a two-shot lead that paved the way to a two-shot victory over Greg Norman and Jim Furyk.

“I thought about the shot a lot on the driving range,” Singh said. “It came out like a dream.”

Singh’s five-under-par 67 in the third and final round gave him a 14-under-par 202 and his first tour victory in two years. It was also his first top-10 finish in 10 starts this season.

The tournament was cut to 54 holes after more than four inches of rain hit Muirfield Village Golf Club on Saturday and Sunday. Play was suspended Sunday afternoon after co-leaders Singh and Scott Hoch had hit their tee shots at the 11th hole.

Hoch injured his back on his first swing Monday. He parred No. 11, but winced on every swing the rest of the way.
