Clinton Lawyer Alters Stance on Case

President Clinton’s lawyer changed course and said Paula Corbin Jones’ sexual history would not be an issue in her harassment case against the president. Robert S. Bennett said he is prepared to attack Jones’ truthfulness--not her sexual habits. Jones, a former Arkansas state employee, has accused Clinton of making sexual advances in an Arkansas hotel room in 1991 while he was governor. Bennett’s comments, in weekend interviews, sparked protest from women’s groups, who have long supported Clinton. White House spokesman Mike McCurry noted that Clinton had signed a law making it harder to explore the sexual histories of alleged victims of sexual harassment. “That’s a significant statement,” McCurry told reporters.
