Killing Coyotes Not the Solution
The Villa Park City Council’s decision to begin trapping and killing coyotes while ignoring the professional advice of numerous wildlife experts (May 29) was irrational and demonstrates a lack of responsibility as public officials.
Judy Maitlen of Orange County Animal Control clearly explained in the council’s last meeting that killing these animals will only result in increased litter sizes and the attraction of coyotes from other areas.
There is a more effective, long-term solution to the problem of coyotes entering neighborhoods. Pets, pet food and garbage should be kept out of the coyotes’ reach. Pets that roam freely face other dangers besides coyotes. These include cars, poisons, diseases, fights with other animals and pet theft.
People who choose to live in areas that encroach into habitat belonging to animals need to learn to respect their environment without exterminating the wildlife.
