Re Richard Bautista (“Boy Wounded in Freeway Shooting Takes First Steps,” June 3):
In the aftermath of the Timothy McVeigh verdict, we must also take notice of another newsworthy event: that of Richard Bautista, the 14-year-old who was shot and paralyzed in a freeway shooting two years ago. Richard, with a smile on his face, took his first step Monday at a Lynwood hospital. He even told his assailant, a teen gang member, that he bears no ill feelings toward him (June 4).
This brave teen is indeed a hero, a shining example of the real meaning of our true humanity. His wisdom and pure heart should remind all of us that we cannot cure a wounded heart with hatred or with revenge. We can only repair it with forgiveness and boundless compassion.
Right on, Richard! Our prayers and good wishes are with you all the way!
