CALIMESA, Calif. — Authorities Wednesday identified the 77-year-old woman who died when a fire raced through the mobile home park where she lived, destroying nine homes and scorching 377 acres.
A spark from a lawn mower is believed to have ignited the fire that killed Tempest V. Arvickson. She died of smoke inhalation shortly after the park was evacuated Tuesday afternoon, said Joanne Evans, a Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman.
More than 180 firefighters summoned to the 3:30 p.m. fire battled the flames for about eight hours before declaring the blaze contained, or surrounded. All hot spots were extinguished by 8 a.m. Wednesday, Evans said.
Fourteen people were treated for smoke inhalation, but their injuries were not serious.
The blaze started just north of the Villa Calimesa Mobile Home Park and west of Interstate 10, which was closed briefly due to dense smoke.
