TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Pat Kennedy confirmed late Wednesday that he would leave Florida State to become the basketball coach at DePaul.
Kennedy, who coached at Florida State for 11 years, reached the decision after interviews with DePaul officials earlier Wednesday.
In a short “very emotional” teleconference late Wednesday, Kennedy informed the Florida State players of his decision.
“He basically said it was a situation he had to do,” junior guard Geoff Brower said. “He didn’t feel comfortable enough here in Tallahassee.”
Kennedy will replace Joey Meyer, who resigned under pressure in April after a 3-23 season.
DePaul received permission early Wednesday from Florida State to interview Kennedy, whose record at Florida State was 202-131.
He is 326-191 in 17 seasons overall, including six years at Iona.
