Rockies See Enough of Johnson, Mariners

SEATTLE — The Colorado Rockies can only be thankful they don’t have to see Randy Johnson in the National League.

They saw too much of him on Friday night.

Johnson held baseball’s highest-scoring team to only two hits in eight innings and struck out 12 as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Rockies, 6-1, to win both games of their interleague series.

Edgar Martinez, who drove in three runs, and Russ Davis each homered as the Mariners won before a crowd of 55,980 at the Kingdome.

Eric Young homered for Colorado, which had 18 hits Thursday night in a 12-11 loss. But with left-handed-hitting Larry Walker, leading the majors with a .409 average, sitting out because he didn’t want to face Johnson--a hard-throwing 6-foot-10 left-hander--the Rockies did little.

Johnson (10-1), dominating with his 98 mph fastball, won his sixth consecutive decision. He extended his career-best scoreless innings streak to 31 before Young homered in the third, and walked two.

Johnson struck out Dante Bichette, Ellis Burks and Harvey Pulliam--the only Rockies to have faced him before--a total of four times.

As home runs go, Young’s wasn’t much. He hit a 1-and-1 pitch just right of the foul pole into the first row of seats in left field.

Andres Galarraga singled to lead off the second for Colorado’s other hit off Johnson.

The Mariners had four doubles among their seven hits. Seattle took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Joey Cora and Ken Griffey Jr.’s sacrifice fly.
