Robert Stevens, like so many who browse the Internet (Film Clips, June 8), seems unaware of the real way to read and discuss cinema: Usenet.
There is a thriving newsgroup devoted to the discussion and appreciation of cinema. Once you become addicted, the World Wide Web seems stifling. Here, you may throw your two cents’ worth, for better or worse, pan a film you hated or glorify one you loved. It’s an exciting, democratic way to heighten your awareness of cinema.
On Cinema-l (bit.listserv.cinema-l), the writers range in age from 18 to 60 and come from all over the world. The chitchat can sometimes be irritating, but after surfing the Web, which has its virtues, I have found that the real thrill of the Internet is in having your ideas and opinions heard, even if no one else agrees with you.
You can subscribe by sending an e-mail to [email protected], putting nothing in the subject header and writing, in the body, subscribe cinema-l (your name).
