Re “Forest Users to Get a Hike,” June 11: In their rush to cut taxes to the rich, Congress has succeeded in levying a new tax on the middle class: the National Forest Adventure Pass, a name that sounds like it’s out of George Orwell’s “1984.”
For a lifelong outdoorsman like me, it is not just the money that matters. Something essential has been taken out of the wilderness experience. I can no longer walk carefree in the woods, or wake up before sunrise for a long day of climbing. No, I will have to time my outings with the schedule of the rangers, maybe even wait in line, to pay $5 for our nature sales tax.
