Burbank Approves 4th Redevelopment Area

TIMES STAFF WRITER

The City Council Tuesday night approved by a 3-0 vote the city’s fourth redevelopment project area.

The establishment of the project area along South San Fernando Road will allow a portion of property tax revenues there to be set aside over coming years for redevelopment.

The South San Fernando Redevelopment Project area includes a long strip of industrial land stretching from downtown Burbank to the Glendale-Burbank border, and also includes areas abutting the Golden State Freeway.

The City Council hopes the property improvements will spur development of vacant properties in the area. Also planned are street improvements, with some of the money used for housing.

Burbank has used redevelopment project areas extensively throughout the city to help recycle land from industrial to retail and commercial uses.

Some business owners in the South San Fernando Redevelopment Project area feared the measure would lead to higher rents but no one spoke against it Tuesday night and the council approved it without discussion.
